More Ways To Style Thick Hair

Thick hair can be a real challenge for stylists and clients alike.  Luckily, with a little bit of skill, it can be transformed into something really amazing.  Thick hair has the potential to be very beautiful when styled properly.  As a stylist, two of the biggest thick hair challenges that I have ever encountered are clients with curly thick hair and clients with thick hair and a round face.  Here are some tips that I have found for working with these two particularly difficult situations.

Curly and Thick Hair Solutions

If your client had curly thick hair or even wavy hair, make sure that you avoid using too many layers.  Layers can accentuate curl and adding in a lot of layers can quickly result in a poufy and disastrous hair style.  I find that limiting layers as much as possible is key when working with this difficult hair type.  I think that shoulder length bobs work great.  The blunt lines of the bob help to control the already curly hair and keeping layers out leads to a more successful final product.  If your client insists on long hair, encourage up dos whenever possible.  Putting the hair up is a gorgeous way to show off those curls without having so much hair down.  There are so many great up dos that work well with long curly hair.  I find that the chignon or French twist work especially well.  Braids are another funky and fashion forward way to style long curly hair.

Thick Hair with Round Face Solutions

By far, my clients with thick hair and round faces are the most difficult to cut and style.  With round faces, it is important to draw the eye away from the face and to other features such as the eye.  This is typically accomplished using layers and other techniques.  With thick hair, this can be especially difficult to accomplish.  I find that it works best to keep the hair either shorter or longer than the chin.  Chin length hair just makes the face look more round.  Side parts work especially well, especially when combined with side bangs.  If the client prefers a center part, layer the hair while focusing the attention of the style to bringing volume to the top of the head.

These techniques have helped me to master the art of styling these two difficult concerns for those with thick hair.  I always encourage my clients take special care of their thick hair.  Frequent cuts and every day washing can help make thick hair look more vibrant and alive.
